About Us

Established in 1989, our organization embarked on a mission to tackle pervasive social issues through voluntary development activities focused on empowering marginalized communities. Originally known as “Keezhmaanagar Mahalir Munnettra Sangham,” we began by organizing oppressed Dalit and impoverished women in the Mangadu area. Over time, our reach expanded to neighboring villages and districts, leading to our transformation in 1996 into the “Women’s Education and Economic Development Society (WEEDS).”

At WEEDS, we firmly believe that societal progress hinges on providing women with equal opportunities for financial and social self-establishment. Our multifaceted approach encompasses Women Empowerment, Children’s Development, Community Development, and Healthcare initiatives.

From 1989 to 2000, WEEDS focused on social justice actions, emphasizing women’s rights and awareness. Recognizing the need for comprehensive development, we shifted our focus in 2000 to implement programs fostering women’s growth. Initiatives such as Women Entrepreneurship Training, Skill Development Training (including our tailoring unit), Self-Help Group activities, Bank Linkage programs, and awareness campaigns on the Prevention, Prohibition & Redressal Act, 2013, addressing Sexual Harassment of Women at the Workplace, became integral to our efforts.

WEEDS is equally committed to children’s development, providing educational scholarship support, distributing school kits, and offering counseling to students facing psycho-social issues. As part of our community development endeavors, we’ve constructed 189 houses for below poverty level families in Kancheepuram & Tiruvallur Districts.

Presently, our organization boasts 1400 self-help groups, directly impacting families by providing financial assistance, supporting children’s education, addressing family issues, and offering legal aid. Looking ahead, we aim to further empower women through the formation of women federation groups in four districts. These federations will spearhead livelihood activities such as tailoring units, dairy farming, aari & embroidery, and organic cultivation. WEEDS remains dedicated to creating lasting positive change in the lives of marginalized communities.
